The Cross and the Switchblade

The Cross & The Switchblade is a true story that has impacted me ever since I first read it. I now find myself reading at least once a year. It goes through David Wilkerson’s journey to New York City and what God had called him there for. This book strikes you right at the heart. Through the actions of David Wilkerson towards Nicky Cruz you are really able to see the love God has for Cruz. You also get to witness the astonishing boldness of Wilkerson as you read.

If there was anything that stood out to me the most in this book it was a dialogue that happened between Cruz and Wilkerson. Here is the excerpt from the book:

“Nicky Cruz: You come near me and I’ll kill you!

David Wilkerson: Yeah, you could do that. You could cut me up into a thousand pieces and lay them in the street, and every piece will still love you.”
David Wilkerson, The Cross and the Switchblade

This is the true love of Jesus Christ a love that says there’s nothing you could do to stop me from loving you. Bottom line is this book show the very beginnings of Teen Challenge a ministry very close and dear to my heart. It shows that one man can make a huge impact on the world if he submits to God. This is truly a inspiring story that reminds me of the boldness we are called to in Proverbs 28:1:

“The wicked flee when no man pursues, but the righteous are bold as lions.”

If you get the chance I do recommend reading the book as well as watching the movie.
